Flow Sciences’ Bulk Powder Weighing Enclosures

LELAND, NC, June 26, 2018 — Weighing powder from a 30-gallon drum? Flow Sciences, Inc. offers Bulk Powder Enclosures that are an effective system for bulk powder applications and large drum loading/unloading. The systems are available in several standard sizes, ranging from 4’ through 8’ exterior width.  A 20” diameter cut-out in the base allows for raising of the powder drum up and into the enclosure. This feature allows for safe weighing without interference stemming from data fluctuation or powder loss.

Bulk Powder Weighing Enclosures are shipped with 3 sizes of rubber membranes which can be cut to adapt to a wide variety of drums. To install, one simply pulls the membrane over the rim of the drum and installs a stainless steel ring to facilitate an air/powder leak-tight seal. Also available is a foot-controlled hydraulic lift (model 6551) which allows for ergonomic lifting of the drum up into the enclosure through the drum cut-out opening.

Results of Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) have proven that Bulk Powder Weighing enclosures meet the performance requirements to retain containment below 1 microgram per cubic meter (μg/m³).  For more potent powders, a gloved Bulk Powder Hybrid Isolator is also available.

Flow Sciences, Inc.’s SAF T FLOW™ Fume Hood Receives Outstanding 3rd-Party Certified EN14175 Fume Hood Containment Results

LELAND, NC, June 7, 2018, — Flow Sciences, a leading provider of containment systems for laboratory, pilot plant, and manufacturing is now shipping the SAF T FLOW™ Fume Hood an addition to its expanding line of standard enclosures.

Dr. Robert K. Haugen, Director of Product and Technology Development at Flow Sciences Inc., today announced that the SAF T Flow™ 6-foot fume hood has received 3rdparty certified EN14175 fume hood containment results from Raleigh, NC based Exposure Control Technologies (ECT). The results showed that under any containment required by EN14175, no observable tracer gas left the fume hood, yielding the lowest possible containment numbers of less than 10 ppb (parts per billion), the detection limit of the instrument.

Randy Blew, of ECT, states in the introduction and summary of the report “Results of tests revealed that the Flow Sciences hood met all acceptance criteria as described herein under all test conditions.” 1

SBA Names Flow Sciences, Inc. North Carolina Exporter Of The Year

 

A Leland-based manufacturer of safety equipment for workers in the pharmaceutical and nanotechnology fields garnered the N.C. Exporter of the Year Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Flow Sciences Inc. received the award at the SBA’s Small Business Week luncheon held in Raleigh last week, at which SBA Administrator Linda McMahon presided.

“Through its expert counselors, the SBA-affiliated Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) has been an integral part of Flow Sciences’ success,” stated the SBA’s announcement of the state’s small business award recipients. “In addition, the company has benefitted from the SBA STEP program, enabling it to expand into foreign markets. Export sales have steadily increased to more than 20 percent of annual revenues and are expected to grow. “

Flow Sciences’ Vice President of International Sales Steve Janz said that the company’s use of state and federal programs to increase its international sales was a key to its winning the award.

The STEP program, for example, provides support to companies that want to attend trade shows and similar business events in target foreign markets, Janz said. Flow Sciences has used it to extend  its international sales, and now has customers in 32 countries.  Since the beginning of 2018, Flow has added customers in Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

To reduce its risk in extending credit to foreign customers, Flow uses the federal Export Import Bank’s credit insurance program, which pays a participating U.S. exporter 95 percent of revenue lost, should a customer default on payment.

With the help of these programs, Flow Sciences has increased its international sales 2-3 percent over the past three years, according to Janz. Foreign sales now represent about 20 percent of its total sales, and Janz expects the upward trend of exports to continue because of the growth of the pharmaceutical industry.

“This year I will spend a total of over a month in India,” he said, citing India’s growing role in the pharmaceutical and nanotechnology industries.

The 2018 Exporter of the Year award is the third accolade Flow Sciences has earned in as many months. In early March, Flow Sciences won the Business Journal-sponsored MADE Award in the Functional Product category. Later that month, the company was recognized by NASBITE (National Association of Small Business International Trade Educators) at its annual conference as one of its Outstanding Exporter Honorees.

This high-level recognition has brought Flow Sciences to the attention of state and federal officials, resulting in the company’s receiving invitations to participate in export-related events, Janz said. Very recently it was invited to an upcoming symposium designed to help businesses in the medical, biomedical and biodefense industries sell their products and services to the federal government and the military.

LELAND, NC – At the 7th annual USA India Business Summit (UIBS) Awards Banquet last month, conference organizers recognized the achievement of business leaders across the Southeast for their efforts to develop strategic business partnerships with Indian companies. The award for R&D and Technology Collaboration was presented to Flow Sciences, Inc. in recognition of the efforts of Steve Janz, VP of International Sales and Strategic Business Development.

 

Speaking on behalf of UIBS, Dr. John R. McIntyre of Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of

Business remarked that the award recognizes “firms and individuals who do more—not only in terms of science and innovation, but in terms of companies that work with India to promote cross-fertilization.”

 

The similarities between Indian and American culture make strategic partnerships ideal for small-to-midsize US companies like Flow Sciences. As Chair of UIBS Ani Agnihotri simply notes, “there is no language barrier.” There are also few governmental barriers. India is the world’s largest democracy, governed by the rule of law, which makes business exchange simple for companies that wish to expand their service offerings beyond the US. India also has an economy spanning 5,000 years, which appeals to many companies that are seeking low-risk opportunities for expansion.

For the executive leaders at Flow Sciences, partnering with India was a relatively straightforward decision, especially considering the predominance of the continent’s pharmaceutical industry. “India is a pharmaceutical mecca,” says Ray Ryan, President & CEO of Flow Sciences. India’s pharmaceutical industry has been valued at over $12 billion and currently exports drugs to more than 200 countries making it the largest provider of generic drugs globally. India accounts for 20% of global exports by volume and represents the 3rd largest market for pharmaceuticals. “The generic drug industry is crucial to the viability of global healthcare,” offers Mr. Ryan, “and we see what we do as an essential safeguard for the production process.”

 

Flow Sciences was founded by Mr. Ryan and his wife Ruth on their dining room table in 1987. They pioneered Vented Balance Safety Enclosures (VBSE™) during the 1990s, introducing the first, independent fan exhaust system to isolate vibrations for balance accuracy. Now they offer pharmaceutical companies and laboratories around the world six different product lines, representing a full range of containment options. “We consider ourselves engineers in the advancement of safety containment,” says Ruth, speaking about their work over the past three decades. She is proud of Flow Sciences’ international efforts to increase awareness and access to safety containment: “Around the world, every minute of every day, someone is being protected by a Flow Sciences safety enclosure.”

 

UIBS was organized in 2010, flowing naturally from a collaborative program between USA India Initiatives, Inc. and Georgia Tech. The program sought to highlight growing business opportunities between the US and India by hosting academic seminars that would recruit US-India business leaders to train a new generation of local experts. Program organizers Mr. Agnihotri and Dr. McIntryre saw great potential for expanding business relationships between the US and India moving beyond India’s support role for US-based tech companies. “India is beyond IT,” Mr. Agnihotri argues. They also felt that a lack of understanding on Indian culture and business was limiting opportunities. Now they see only growth. US-India business opportunities are expected to top $1 trillion by 2020 from the $120 billion in business today.

 

For Dr. McIntyre, the value of potential business expansion goes beyond the bottom line: “By building international relationships we also share complementary skills that make for greater scientific innovation,” he continued, “an award like this is a recognition of a very important component of overall India-US relations.”
